The Horticulture Innovation Lab at the University of California, Davis is funded by USAID to manage a portfolio of projects aimed at improving horticulture for development in Feed the Future countries. Projects focus on all aspects of the horticulture value chain from seed to markets, with emphasis on nutrition, gender, postharvest, and innovative technologies. The Global Food Security Initiative (GFSI), passed by Congress in 2016, has a goal of sustainably reducing global hunger, malnutrition and poverty; elevating the importance of malnutrition compared to the previous program. The new results framework under GFSI also includes an objective on Strengthened resilience along with- Inclusive and sustainable agriculture-led economic growth, and -A well-nourished population. The horticulture sector can significantly contribute to achieving these key objectives, and the research, capacity building and outreach activities supported by the Horticulture Innovation Lab contributes to the sector’s success.
