The Borlaug Initiatives
Dr. Norman E. Borlaug has served as the Distinguished Professor in International Agriculture at Texas A&M University since 1984. As the largest center for agriculture and life sciences in the world, Texas A&M Agriculture is - by virture of mission and vision - uniquely poised for a new era of global leadership.
The Norman Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture seeks to build an endowment through philanthropic support. This support is vital to the establishment of international fellowships, endowed chairs, programs, and facilities to achieve the Borlaug Institute's goals of feeding the world's hungry and promoting
peace through scientific innovation and global collaboration.
Please contact Julie Borlaug for information on any of these initiatives (+1.979.845.8275
or jborlaug@tamu.edu).
The Borlaug Institute Excellence Fund
As our signature endowment, the Excellence Fund allows for the long-term sustainability of the educational, outreach, and research programs of the Borlaug Institute. It guarantees the legacy of Dr. Borlaug and provides the opportunity for targeted and sustained agricultural interventions around the world.
If you would like to give to the Excellence Fund, please make payment to the "Texas A&M Foundation" and reference the "Borlaug Institute Excellence Fund." Payment can be sent directly to the Foundation or can be sent to the Borlaug Institute offices.
The Borlaug Institute Student Experience Fund
The Student Experience Fund is specifically for providing international educational and extension opportunities for students. An objective of the Institute is to increase exposure of Texas A&M students to the needs of the developing world. With this fund, students will realize they can personally address challenges facing the global community. It will focus on empowering students to use science and innovation to end hunger, increase livelihoods, and conserve natural resources.

Norman E. Borlaug Endowed Chair for International Agriculture
A reflection of Dr. Borlaug's courageous and dynamic approach to problem solving, the chair will focus on critical issues facing sustainable agricultural systems throughout the world. A spokesperson for international agricultural research, the chair holder will draw upon his or her own previous contributions to the field, acting as a
catalyst for innovation and positive change in the developing world. The
incumbent will be an agricultural scientist who has collaborated to achieve
seminal impact on food security and shows dedication to making a continued
contribution built on his or her own achievements.
The chair will provide leadership and promote partnerships by collaborating
with national and international universities, governments, industries,
nongovernmental organizations, and international research centers. It will
elevate international agriculture at Texas A&M by working across disciplines
to advance global agricultural research, especially in developing countries.
Agricultural Policy Executive Leadership Forum
This high-level forum will include lectures, seminars, discussions, workshops,
and roundtables at Texas A&M and in Washington, D.C. The program
will consist of 10 to 15 participants annually, aimed at current and future
agricultural policy makers. Topics will include strategic issues in agricultural
science and technology policy—including technology transfer, cutting-edge
research, agricultural education strategies, food distribution policies, poverty
reduction, agribusiness development, international trade agreements and
negotiations, and development of leadership skills.
The forum will last from two to three weeks and involve travel within the
United States. Participants will interact with high-level executives from U.S.
agribusinesses, state and federal policy makers, and senior representatives
from multilateral and bilateral agencies, with the goal of deepening their
understanding of current and emerging issues in agricultural science and
technology, international trade, poverty reduction, and environmental
sustainability. They will also facilitate negotiations between countries or
regions, exchange and adopt successful policies, share business and research
successes, and—as a result—sow the seeds of partnership among nations.
Norman E. Borlaug Endowed Fellowships
The Norman E. Borlaug Endowed Fellowships help developing countries
strengthen agricultural science and practice by providing short-term scientific
training and collaborative research opportunities to visiting researchers,
businesspersons, policy makers, and university faculty, in partnership with
mentors. A fellowship can truly change the life of an agriculturist in early to
middle career through the experience, knowledge, and skills gained during
research or other problem-solving activity. The opportunity presents the
Borlaug Fellows the freedom to pursue their own course of research and
work with experienced firms or government officers in agricultural science
and policy. On returning to their home-country universities, institutions,
or government agencies, the Fellows have the opportunity to implement
improved practices in their teaching skills/curriculum development, research,
and outreach programs, with a continuing relationship with their mentor(s).
